60 pounds of Green Beans

Aug 10, 2009

At lunch today I had the special treat of being able to buy fresh sweet corn and green beans about 100 feet from our front office door. As some of you know, we have put in a large one acre garden this summer to help keep some of our people busy (instead of laying them off). The 'produce market' today was on the street next to our factory, so I bought sweet corn, green beans, green peppers, green onions and a yellow squash - all picked this morning from the Midwest Control 'employee garden'. The lady who was manning the stand (who is normally machining yoke ends) told me that we picked 60 pounds of green beans and a pallet load of sweet corn today. We feel fortunate that we have not put anyone on layoff in this recession. We are also enjoying the novelty of using a garden to keep our people busy and productive. What interesting times! There's a write up on this in a local newspaper. The web link: http://www.macombjournal.com/news/x1876199115/Midwest-Control-garded-in-full-bloom

Television Coverage - The right thing to do.

Jun 17, 2009

We have been doing a number of interesting things during this recession to keep from laying off any of our employees. Apparently this has caught the attention of some of the regional media. Today, WQAD from Moline, IL sent a TV crew to film and interview a number of our folks regarding what some of our work-creating, anti-recession activities have been. While they were interested in our political letter writing campaign that the employees have been conducting (repeal the stimulus, cut taxes), they were most interested in our 20,000 square foot garden. When one of the TV crew asked Mark Rauschert, our President, why we're doing this, Mark responded, 'We're debt free. We've had it good for a long time. We're getting new work everyday. It is the right thing to do."

RECESSION. RECESSION.

Apr 15, 2009

We now have over 5,500 active customers. These customers are in a variety of industries - so much so that we are able to see a good cross-section of how the recession is effecting various industries. It's safe for us to say that if you are reading this paragraph, your business is probably off between 35% and 75% this year. We too are seeing the effects of the recession on our business. However, our approach of dealing with it, instead of laying off people, is to cut as many of our non-labor overhead expenses as possible. We started this back in December and our results to date have been fantastic. We haven't let anyone go and we're still making money. Having said that, it's not been easy - we have had to become VERY creative. We've done things such as taping windows (back in January) and cleaning our own toilets. Now that the weather is warming up, we are planning on mowing our own grass. Our main factory here (located in Illinois) sits on 11 acres. We are getting ready to plant trees (manually), and believe or not, we're going to put in a victory garden to help keep our people busy. If you find all of this of interest, let us know (mcr@midwestcontrol.com), and I'll try to post updates on the new and clever things we're willing to do to keep our people employed during these crazy economic times.
